How many driving lessons do you really need?

The national average says little about you. Four things determine how many lessons you need. You control three of them.

It is the first question almost everyone asks during the trial lesson: how many lessons will this cost me? The honest answer is that nobody can say exactly after one lesson. What we can do is explain what makes the difference.

What the national average does and does not mean

In the Netherlands the average number of lessons is around forty. That figure sums up people who pass after twenty lessons and people who need eighty. It says more about the spread than about you. A driving school promising you a hard number before your first lesson is selling you a guess.

Four factors that make the difference

1. Your prior experience

Have you driven on a closed course, abroad or on a scooter? Then the foundation is often already there: clutch feel, speed judgement, observation. In practice that saves ten to fifteen lessons.

2. When you pass your theory

This is the most underestimated factor. Anyone who leaves theory until the end uses driving lessons to learn traffic rules. That is the most expensive way there is. Pass your theory in the first weeks and your instructor only has to teach you how to apply those rules.

3. How often you drive

Once a week is the minimum to hold on to progress. Twice a week is demonstrably more efficient: you no longer start each lesson with fifteen minutes of recovering what you already knew. Over a full course that easily saves five to ten lessons.

4. Where you drive

Learning to drive in Maastricht confronts you with everything from lesson one: bridges, cyclists, one-way systems, a tunnel on the A2 and, in the hills, gradients too. That feels harder at first, but you are ready for the exam sooner. And more importantly, for what comes after.

What we do after the trial lesson

After your trial lesson you get an estimate as a range, for example 25 to 32 lessons. Not a sales pitch, but what we consider realistic based on that first drive. If it turns out you are progressing faster or slower, we tell you in good time, not when the package has run out.
